Tree Removal in Telford

Many of the trees we take down in Telford stand on the post-war new-town estates that make up much of the town. Properties in areas like Woodlands, Brookside, Stirchley and Priorslee tend to have mature front and rear gardens where a tree has simply outgrown the space it was planted in. When a tree is close to a house, a conservatory, a fence or an outbuilding, a straight fell is rarely safe, so the work is carried out as a sectional dismantle — the tree is taken down piece by piece, with each section roped and lowered to the ground rather than dropped.

Where limbs extend over fences, sheds, greenhouses or a neighbour's garden, we rig those sections with lowering ropes and friction devices so they are held under control all the way down. On tight sites we climb the tree rather than bring in a platform, and we route timber through a single safe drop zone to keep the surrounding property clear. TreeTech Shropshire carries out this work to BS3998, the British Standard for tree work, and all arisings are chipped and removed from site unless you would prefer to keep the wood.

Because much of Telford sits on clay subsoils, we are also asked to remove trees close to foundations where insurance surveys have linked subsidence or heave to root activity. In those cases we work from the arboriculturalist's recommendation and leave a clear, documented site so the insurer's requirements are met.

Crown Reduction & Pruning in Telford

Crown reduction in Telford is most often requested where a tree has grown up against a house and is blocking light, touching gutters, or drawing moisture from foundations on the clay soils common across the town. A reduction brings the overall height and spread of the canopy down by a measured percentage while keeping the tree's natural shape, rather than simply chopping the top off. We also carry out crown lifts — removing the lower branches to clear paths, drives and sightlines — and selective thinning to let light through without altering the tree's outline.

All pruning follows BS3998. We make correct pruning cuts back to natural target points so the tree can compartmentalise the wound, and we avoid leaving stubs that decay. Where a tree has been heavily topped or lopped in the past — common on older Telford lime and sycamore — we carry out restoration pruning over a number of seasons rather than one severe cut.

Over-thinning, where too much foliage is removed in a single operation, weakens a tree by removing the leaves it needs to feed itself and can trigger fast, weak regrowth that is prone to breaking. We thin conservatively, never strip the inner canopy, and keep enough leaf cover for the tree to remain vigorous and stable.

Emergency Tree Work in Telford

Telford's mature trees take the worst of the winter gales that funnel across the Shropshire plain, and after a storm the call we get most often is for a tree, or a major limb, that has come down on a drive, a car, a fence or across a shared access road. TreeTech Shropshire provides a 24/7 emergency response across Telford and the wider Telford & Wrekin area for storm damage, wind-thrown trees, split stems and hanging limbs left dangerous after a blow.

When we attend an emergency the first job is to make the situation safe — prop or take down the hanging limb, clear the access, and deal with anything that could fall on a person or property. We then dismantle the failed tree, chip and remove the debris, and leave the site clear. Where the tree has caused damage we photograph the scene for the insurer. For genuine emergencies — a tree on a house, across a road, or a limb hanging over a public path — call 07727 366291 and we will prioritise the call.

Stump Grinding & Hedge Cutting in Telford

Once a tree is down, the stump is usually the last thing in the way of reusing the space. We grind stumps to below ground level using a stump grinder, so the area can be turfed, paved or planted over without the stump regrowing or leaving a trip hazard. Grinding produces a mulch of the stump and surface roots which we clear away, and we leave the hole ready for topsoil if you are reinstating a lawn. On the older estates around Dawley and Madeley we frequently grind out the stumps of leylandii that have been removed from boundary lines.

Hedge cutting in Telford covers the long runs of privet, hawthorn and leylandii that screen many of the town's gardens, as well as formal beech and yew. We cut to a height and shape that suits the hedge species and the space, take away all clippings, and time the work so we do not disturb nesting birds. Annual maintenance keeps a hedge dense at the base and within its bounds; we also carry out one-off reductions where a hedge has been allowed to grow over a path or into a neighbour's ground.

Areas We Cover Around Telford

TreeTech Shropshire covers Telford itself and the towns and villages that sit around it. As well as working across the Telford new-town communities, we regularly carry out tree surgery in Wellington, Oakengates, Madeley, Dawley, Priorslee, Stirchley, Leegomery and Donnington. To the east of the town we also cover Newport and Shifnal, and we travel west toward Bridgnorth where we are based.

Most of our Telford work is within a short drive of the town centre, so we can usually get to you quickly for both quoted work and emergency call-outs. If you are outside the list above but still in the TF postcode area, give us a call — the chances are we already work nearby. We do not charge a call-out fee for quoted work in the Telford area.

Tree Preservation Orders in Telford

A number of neighbourhoods in Telford are covered by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) or sit within conservation areas, particularly around the older settlements of Wellington, Ironbridge and Madeley, and in parts of the Wrekin. A TPO makes it an offence to cut down, top, lop, uproot or wilfully damage a protected tree without the local authority's consent, and conservation area status gives similar protection to trees above a certain size.

Before we quote, we check whether the tree you want work on is protected. If it is, the work has to go through Telford & Wrekin Council, who administer TPOs and conservation area consents for the borough. We will advise you on the process, prepare the application or notice, and carry out the work exactly as the consent allows once permission is granted. We will not carry out work on a protected tree without the correct paperwork in place.

FAQs

Telford Tree Surgery FAQs

If your tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order or sits within a conservation area, consent has to come from Telford & Wrekin Council before any work starts. We check this for you before quoting and prepare the application. Trees in many older Telford neighbourhoods, particularly around Wellington and Ironbridge, are commonly protected.

Telford is within a short drive of our base, so quoted work is normally booked within a few days and emergency call-outs are often attended the same day. For dangerous trees or storm damage, call 07727 366291 and we will make the call a priority.

Yes. We provide 24/7 emergency tree work, including weekends and out of hours. Routine quoted work can also be arranged for a Saturday where that suits you better.
